About us
In 2022, we were a bunch of researchers, media developers and editors-in-chiefs who asked ourselves: Why do we always talk about journalism in relation to freedom of expression only? Or treat media business models as separate from the development of our societies? Why don’t we talk about the intertwined relationship between journalism and sustainable, resilient societies?
So, we decided to form a global NGO to experiment with both practical projects and research to find new ways of thinking journalism. Instead of developing concepts in separated silos, we wanted to direct our spotlights on a holistic worldview, investigating how we can make local journalism that is focused on the challenges of our time – the polycrisis. And how we can make this kind of journalism attractive to younger audiences
Here are some of the things we have done and aim to do:
- We organised a global constitutional conference, where we launched the concept of sustainable journalism.
- Together with Fojo, Aga Khan School of Media and Wits Media Centre we organised an African conference on the theme: Sustainable journalism in practice.
- Together with the Guardian, Schibsted, Politiken and Sanoma we produced the online course “How to run an Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Media Company”
- Together with Natur of Ungdom, RARE Media, DMJX students, Schibsted, Politiken, OsloMet, Royal Institute of Technology, the Swedish Defence University and others we jointly examined how journalism can be made that addresses the polycrisis and boosts interest among young audiences
- Together with Stockholm School of Economics, Media & Journalism Research Centre, Stowarzyszenie Gazet Lokalnych and VIKES we investigated how journalism can make local media and local communities more resilient to both military and environmental threats.
Here are some of the things we are about to do:
- Start a new scientific journal on journalism and sustainability
- Start a pilot project in Sweden and Norway based on the experiences of our recent sedd projects. This project is envisaged to be scaled up and implemented in the Nordics, Baltics and Ukraine.
